A Nurse’s Prayer
July 5, 2008The world grows better year by year,
Because some nurse in her little sphere,
Puts on her apron and grins and sings
And keeps on doing the same old things.
Taking the temperature, giving the pills
To remedy mankind’s numberless ills;
Feeding the baby, answering the bells
Being polite with a heart that rebels.
Longing for home and all the while
Wearing the same old professional smile;
Blessing the new born babe’s first breath
Closing the eyes that are still in death.
Taking the blame for the doctor’s mistakes,
Oh Dear, what a lot of patience it takes;
Going off duty at 7 o’clock
Tired, discouraged and ready to drop.
But called back on special at 7:15
With woe in her heart but it must not be seen.
Morning and evening and noon and night,
Just doing it over and hoping it’s right.
When we lay down our caps and cross the bar,
Oh Lord, will You give us just one little star,
To wear in crowns with our uniforms new
In that city above where the HEAD NURSE is YOU.
This poem was a text message sent to me by my friend, Zarren. It describes well what kind of job nurses have - it’s difficult and self-sacrificing, indeed! I kinda agree with my former professor in college, Dr. Cabanlig when she said that nursing is the most noble profession. Well, it may be true but I think being a nurse is just one of the noblest professions in the world. I can think of other professions/jobs that are also noble like being a soldier, priest, nun, missionary, social worker, etc. In the end, it won’t depend on the kind of profession we have, anyway. I suppose it will be on the kind of person we would have become out of our professions/jobs/occupations.

i dont know how i get your blog but that prayer speaks for itself, im currently working in mt sinai, ny and from my experience, our emotions are like roller coaster from cheering patient to boosting their hopes showing emphaty and the rest, thats why when you get home you feel like you were beaten up, but when you think of it, its all worth it and i love that feeling..really!.SATISFACTION!dont you!
